Sorcery is  a type of magic that is natural to all humans in my fictional world. Basically the human soul contains life force, and this life force, when stronger than a human body can physically handle, forms a physical manifestation of itself through crystallization. This process can also be "forced" by metaphysically "injecting" energy - that is, life force - into a would-be-Sorcerer.
This, however is rarely done for three reasons. The first is that if the person - usually another Sorcerer or a Shaman - helping to raise the energy levels does so too quickly the would-be-Sorcerer can go into shock and die, which means you really have to be able to trust the person helping you. The second reason most people would rather not become a Sorcerer is that the process is damn uncomfortable! The crystal that contains a Sorcerers' power has to exit the body the same exact way anything else would pass through; meaning there are two possible exit points, think of food intake and you'll get the idea...
The third reason is that a Sorcerer's crystal is a part of them - in fact the most important part! - it contains their life force and some would say their very souls, so they have to guard them with their very lives because if they are destroyed the person is destroyed with them. So if someone stole a Sorcerer's crystal, they would, in essence, be able to control the sorcerer...

This system of life force is also how natural Shamans come into being, being the exact opposite of a Sorcerer who has too much energy. They have enough life force to be born, but as they grow older and need larger amounts that usually naturally increase with age for some reason don't with some people, so they need to "take" it from elsewhere...

I'll likely expand on this later, but I just took a killer science test and I'm drained... I just wanted to get this up.

Post on Magecraft should be up by this weekend hopefully...

Shamanism is very common in certain parts of my fictional world and almost nonexistent - if not entirely nonexistent - in other parts. the reason for this being that Shamanism is in many places seen as being nothing more than psychic vampirism, which, in many ways, it is. Shamans draw power from living beings; this could be from plants, but even the tallest trees can only give casters a very limited, and very weak, power. Many Shamans keep a familiar whom they work with, rather than steal from. However, in some of the "wilder," more lawless areas of my world, Shamans keep a horde of slaves whom they habitually drain life force from and then discard the "waste" that is the physical carcass. It is these Shamans that give all of the other more humanitarian Shamans a very bad - and in a lot of cases completely undeserved - reputation of being "evil."
I had mentioned before that Shamanism is an in-born ability. Basically this means that some children "accidentally" start draining people/animals of their energy because of a distinct lack of energy in themselves, which I will explain in greater detail when I talk about Sorcery.

In my main stories, Shamans aren't going to be featured too much, so the other magic systems are all slightly more developed. There is only one major ongoing plot point at this point that gives a Shaman a significant place in the story. This, of course, is likely to change as time passes, but for now, know that they exist and the basics of their craft and you'll be good.

More to come!

My four magical systems, Wizardry, Shamanism, Sorcery, and Magecraft, are distinctive in how they work - that is, what people have to do in order to use them.
The most common - and also the weakest - is Wizardry. The main two drawbacks of being a Wizard are:
A.) the fact that it can only be used outdoors, and the caster has to be physically touching a natural element (hand on a tree, letting rain touch their skin, barefoot against soil, etc.) the exception being that wind can't be used as a magical conductor so while letting it whip through their hair might make them look majestic, it has no effect on their spell casting abilities whatsoever.
B.) to work magic a Wizard has to recite from memory or a spell  book long, complicated incantations to preform even the smallest bits of magic.
For these reasons, most Wizards are going to be focused on long term magical projects and won't be involved too much in conflicts.
In my next post, I will continue my explination of magical systems, focusing on Shamanism, which, while being far more powerful than Wizardry is far less powerful than the other two types - as well, it has some interesting social stigmas associated with it. Stay tuned. =)

So I was discussing with my friend ([personal profile] azremodehar) the fact that I am looking for a place to post my works of fiction that isn't along the same lines as places like fictionpress.com (don't get me wrong, I have plenty of love for FP, but I want my "own space") and she told me that I should post it here and tweet a general announcement whenever I upload a new chapter, so that is basically what I'm going to be using this account for. (And maybe I'll even be able to get motivated enough to get off my ass and finish my outlining/world building so I can get down to some serious writing here sometime in the near future so I actually have things to post!)

Some basics about my fiction: my "main" series of stories is going to be set in a world of my own creation, there won't be any races except your basic humans but there will be a very extensive magic system where there are different "types" of magic users, the four main types being Sorcery, Magecraft, Wizardry, and Shamanism. One of the ways my world will be different from most is that anyone will be able to learn and use magic if they so choose, depending on the type, their natural and cultural affinity, and their own interest, however like anything else, there are people who are just going to be better at it than others and two of the four types, Sorcery and Shamanism, are in-born types so there are some people who don't have a choice but to use them. This isn't to say other people can't use it, it's a potential that all people have, just the potential is stronger in some than others and "breaks to the surface" if you will.

To be continued...
